Explain the role of the inspector in David's society.
The Inspectors role in David's society is to exaimin, and judge all things that are unknown or are unsure of. To say weither they are created in God's eye/shape. Or weither they are an abomiation, thus against God.
Like Connor said, "the inspector's role in David's society is to examine and judge all the things that are unknown…" The inspector is to make sure that each child that is born is within the "true image of God" and has no deviations. the Inspector is also to issue a certificate to the parents if the child is found to be "normal". The child is not to be known to anyone until the certificate is issued.
In David's society, the inspector has some power. For example, when Petra is born, although the inspector come to the house late to make Joseph angry. However,Joseph doesn't quarrel with him because he knows that the inspector has too many ways of hitting back and makes an effort to be formally polite.
As connor and kendra say, the major role of the inspector is "to examine and judge all the things that are unknown or unsure of". The inspector gives a certificate to a "normal" baby after examining. The inspector also has official duty to protect approved "Offences" from harm by "fools and bigots" (p38) and to get report from the people. The inspector is also "an expert of Deviation" (p54).
In David's society, the role of the inspector is to examine and to determine who and what is to be considered as "normal". Nothing can have any slight deviation to it, or it is considered a blasphemy. It is the job of the inspector to point out these differences and to not accept it. As an example, for the case of a baby being born, the inspector has to come instantly to inspect the baby all over to check for any deviations. If the baby even has the slightest inormality to it, it is considered a mutant. It then is no longer treated as human as it is not accepted in the eyes of god. If the baby passes the inspection with no inormalities, the ispector has the authority to give it a cirtificate declaring it's existance as a human being. It is the inspectors duty to follow these procedures in the ways from Nicholson's Repentances.
The inspectors role is to deal with all issues concerning "offences" and "blasphemies". He is to inspect these being and denote them in the "norm" or "inpure". Once the inspector has giving his word the beings are dealt with accordingly. Nothing is to be desctroyed or ridden of until hte inspector has seen it and made his decision. He has control over the WAknuk district and no further. Any government rule over rides his jurisdiction. He also deals with the certifying of new born babies and makes sure they are pure.
In Davids society, the inspector has the largest role. He is in charge of all things living, in the area of Waknuk. The inspector decides what is normal and what was brought to them by the devil. Like Victoria said, the inspector has the authority to say whether someone exists or not. David's entire society depends on what the inspector has to say. In that case, concealing anything deviational or unknown from the inspector can lead to concequences.
In The Chrysalids, the inspectors have, in most peoples eyes, the most important job. That job is to inspect every child that is born, every animal that is born, and every crop that is grown to judge whether the babies are in "the true image of God" or whether the animals and crops have all of the "normal" characteristics of what they believe are perfect living beings. If they deem something out of the norm, or not in the "true image" then it doesn't receive a certification, and is therefore cast out (humans), killed (animals), or burned (crops).
The inspector is basically the eyes of the people. And what the people want is the norm, anything that is safe and doesn't disrupt much. So what the inspector does is run a little interview or inspection you can say of one, and verify's if they're what the society seeks in a human, animal or plant. If you fail it you're considered another class, a lower one. Everyone seeks the approval, and put it into the hands of the lower government to make sure that the rules and norms are set
The inspector determines which deviations should be destroyed. Deviations of plants and animals are killed. People with deviations are forced to leave the town. His job is to find them, decided if they are really mutations, and have them destroyed. He is supposed to keep the area pure.
