Who do you think killed Alan? Explain your reasoning with examples from the text.
I thought Michael is the one who killed Alan because he is the one who strongly disagrees with Anne's marriage. When Anne announces her marriage wih Alan, Michael is the one "who put it to Anne first" (p91). Like the proverb "the guilty dog barks first", after Alan's death, Michael is the first one who asks the group if anyone did it or know anything about it.
I also thought that Uncle Axel could be the killer because he is the one who tells David to kill Anne to save the rest of the people in the group and knows that Anne will tell Alan about the group.
Even before I read it, I had had a feeling that Uncle Axel was the one to kill Alan because he had told David that David himself should kill Anne or Alan to protect the group. When David refused, you could tell that Uncle Axel was going to do something because of how protective he is of David. Uncle Axel knew what needed to be done and he went through with it. He was just protecting who he loved.
At first, I, like Yu Ho, thought it was either Michael or Uncle Axel who was the killer but as time went on, I began leaning more towards Uncle Axel.
Like Kendra said, he suggests to David that he should kill Anne or Alan to protect the group. He also seems to press very hard to change David's opinion on the matter. He cares deeply about David and inquires about the group's secret on a few occasions, making sure it's kept. Again, like Kendra said, "He was just protecting who he loved."
I think axel killed Allan because he was the one who suggested it in the first place. David would always go to him for advice with the groups issues, and with this matter Axel decided it was the only way to avoid the group being detected. After seeing how David and his group were to young and did not have the mental strength to tkae it upon themselves to kill Allan, Axel must of seen the progressingly dangerous situation and taken the initiative to kill Allan himself.
I think Uncle Axel murdered Alan because there is enough evidence that would prove my reasonings to believe this. Ucle Axel said that "one of you is set on a course which is going to endanger the lives of all eight" (p.95). He was refereing to Anne as endangering them all. Uncle Axel knew that if Anne told Alan about the telepathic communication, Alan would expose them all and put them all at risk. Uncle Axel didn't want to take this risk of putting the lives of David and the others in danger, so that is why I believe he killed Alan. I truely think that Uncle Axel was trying to do the right thing, and in my opinion I think he did. Uncle Axel told David a story about a sailer putting the rest of the crews lives in danger. The crew then decided to throw this man overboard. Uncle Axel believes that the crew did the right thing because its better to save a whole bunch of lives, then for only one to survive. This story is the same case as for David and the others.
Like many others, I believe that it was none other than Davids Uncle Axel who murdered Alan. He was the person who suggested to David that it would be a wise decision to kill Alan as he would learn more of their abilities, and possibly find out who all the group members were. Axel knew that if Alan was to discover these things, he would surely report them, possibly resulting in them being killed or just simply sent to the fringes. Normally killing would be the absolute wrong thing to do, but disposing of Alan ensures the lives of many people, and maybe even the future of Waknuk.
From the beginning of the novel i learned how Uncle Axel really wants to protect David and his group. When i read about Alan's tradigy, I was thinking, who murdered Alan and why? then I remembered that Uncle Axel told David that he well protect him and keep the secret with him.
As I started reading, I also remembered that Uncle Axel had told David that David himself should kill Anne or Alan to protect the group. When David refused to Uncle Axel's opinion, you could tell that Uncle Axel had to do something with Alan's tradigy because we know how protective he is and how he really wants to pretect the people he loves.
