Songs

One Tin Soldier - The Original Caste
"Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end."

(In David's society, everything is justified in the name of Heaven, especially brutality, and prejudice.)

My Skin - Natalie Merchant
"Take a look at my body,
look at my hands
there's so much here that I don't understand"

(I imagine Fringes don't understand why they are considered unhuman, neither does David.)

"I've been treated so wrong
I've been cheated so long as if I'm becoming untouchable."

(Fringes are treated poorly and are "untouchable".)

Perfect - Hedley
"I’m not perfect but I keep trying
‘Cause that’s what I said I would do from the start"

(Sophie know's that in David's society, she's not "perfect" but her parents and her keep trying to fool the world by hiding her extra toe from everybody.)

Don't Laugh at Me - Mark Wills
"You don't have to be my friend
But is it too much to ask
Don't laugh at me
Don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain
In God's eyes we're all the same
Someday we'll all have perfect wings
Don't laugh at me"

(These lyrics are something I imagine people like Sophie and the people of the Fringes would say to people like David's father.)

Goodbye - Hedley
"It could be worse
I could be you
I could be outta luck and that'll never do
I'm liking my clothes
I'm safe in my shoes
I'm glad your gone
and I dont got alot to lose"

(This seems to be something that Davids father, Joseph, wouldn't even hesitate to say to the people of the Fringes. He doesn't care about those people and really only cares that they don't belong and should be gone.)
